Whether you’re a job seeker, entrepreneur or happily employed, LinkedIn can be an asset for your career. The professional networking website allows you to connect to your ideal business partners, recruiters or even old colleagues.

When you are winning new clients or building your professional profile, LinkedIn allows you to research on various key contacts. It seems “it isn’t what you know, it’s who you know” still holds value.

We looked though the features of LinkedIn and found various ways in which you are able to personalize your account.

Ask for Recommendations
Recommendations are a valuable part of your profile and could be the one thing that gets you the deal when a possible client/recruiter is comparing you to your competitor. Most people forget to ask for a recommendation; however they can make you stand out from the crowd.

Research
If you are meeting an employer or potential client, by looking them up and finding something out about them, can help break the ice.

Update your Summary
Ensure you include your unique abilities and differentiators, such as industry awards and honors. In the second paragraph, you should define your career aspirations, including a summary of your work experience.

Improve your Connections
By adding connections, you increase the likelihood that people will see your profile first when they’re searching for someone to hire or do business with.

Increase your visibility
Some users only put their current company in their profile. By doing so, they severely limit their ability to connect with people. You should fill out your profile like it’s an executive bio, so include past companies, education, affiliations, and activities. Using your existing C.V. can make it easier to fill your profile.

Earlier this month, Vivek Bhardwaj, RIM’s Head of Software Portfolio announced that the first BlackBerry 10 smartphone will be launched in October 2012.

“The Blackberry 10 Smartphone interface is built around fluid gestures and swipes, rather than lots of individual taps to get into and out of different apps and functions. It is also being specifically designed to allow BlackBerry owners to get to the app’s they want by using just one hand or a single thumb,” said Vivek.

Earlier this year RIM confirmed they will concentrate on the corporate market than the consumer, therefore there has been discussion whether this will be the last consumer phone available. RIM’s smartphone market share has slipped, because the smartphone maker has fallen behind on new smartphone releases.

The Features of BB10

The features will include;

Full touch-screen therefore the QWERTY keyboard will be the thing of the past for Blackberry users

The ability to swipe right to delete anywhere on the keyboard, swipe down to access numbers and symbols, and swipe up at word suggestions to power through sentences more quickly.

Image editing application where a user can take a snapshot and then replace specific areas of the image after a few seconds. For example you can take a photo of a group of friends, and then swap out the one who forgot to smile with the cheesy grin they pulled a second later.

The predictive text feature will places words above various keys which are in the path of letters the user might type. A simple flick gesture will then complete the word. This solution is more elegant and logical than existing options that place a list of word recommendations across the top of the virtual keypad.

Instead of individual Icons there will be four large panes which are full, active apps meaning they will change as their content changes. To fully dive into one of these homescreen apps you just tap on the relevant pane.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a new concept that is adopted by many of the organizations, it involves employees bringing personal devices to work, and using those devices to access company resources such as email, file servers, and databases.

It is predicted that by 2016, 9.5 million employees in the UK will be using their own devices for work.

Even though it is a recent topic of discussion this concept has been used within the Higher Education Sector for many years as majority of students prefer using their own equipment for their personal or academic usage rather than the ones provided.

The BYOD scheme would work within some organisations, depending the type of data that is being transferred. When thinking about implementing this scheme the organisation need to ask themselves, what is the information that it is trying to protect? What is it worth? It is important that everyone in the organisation understands how important IT security is and should be educated on security risks all employees should understand the rules that are in place.

Advantages and Disadvantage of BYOD

Advantages

Businesses that adopt a BYOD policy allow themselves to save money on such high priced devices that normally they would be required to purchase for their employees.

Employees maytake better care of a device that they view as their own property.

Employees are able to decide on the technology that they wish to use for work.

Disadvantages

The most important challenge in a BYOD environment is ensuring network security. This is a major concern for organisations which deal with confidential data. If users bring their own devices, it becomes very difficult to monitor various devices. Some devices may transmit viruses and damage the network and other devices connected to the network.

However due to security issues employees do not have true full control over their device as the company they work for would need to ensure that private information is secure at all times. It is an out-of-pocket expense for the employee and they would be responsible for repairs if the device was damaged or broken while doing work required by the job.

What are your views on BYOD? If you would like any more information about various devices contact the Fifosys team on 0207 644 2610

Earlier last week O2, introduced the new innovative method of paying by text messaging. The O2 Wallet smartphone app was launched in order to allow users to transfer up to £500 via a single text message. It is a free app available to download on majority of smartphones including Blackberry, iPhone, and Android allowing consumers to transfer cash via their mobile, compare prices, track their spending and shop at major retailers including Debenhams, Comet, Sainsbury’s Direct and Tesco Direct.

This service will make online shopping and lending, borrowing or repaying money to friends and family easier than ever.

Security Features
The general worry for potential users will be the issue of security, therefore in order to access the wallet, consumers will need to enter a pin number.

Experts at O2 have said the app has undergone extensive security and testing to ensure it is safe. Personal details and financial information will be held on remote central servers rather in the in the mobile phone itself.

How it works?

Open your O2 Wallet, tap ‘Money Message’ and choose ‘send money’.

Enter in your friend’s number or add it from your contacts.

Choose the amount of money.

Then press ‘confirm’ and ‘ok’ and the transaction is complete.

Helpful Hints

The sender and the receiver will need to have the app downloaded in order for the transaction to be processed

You do not have to be an o2 customer

When the money arrives safely, the sender will receive a message to let them know it’s in their O2 Wallet, ready to spend.

Initially the service is free however after six months, customers will be charged 15p per text message sent

If you would like more information on the O2 wallet or safety when paying online contact the Fifosys Team on 0207 644 2610

Everyone wants something written at the bottom of their emails, whether this is your contact details, a quote or how they can follow you on your social networks.

How to get started?
Click on the File tab at the top of the page, then Options. Here you will have a number of different tabs from top to bottom starting at General and ending in Trust Centre. From this list you need to select the ‘Mail’ tab. Now look on the right and the third option down should be ‘Signatures…’ select this.

When the pop up appears, click on ‘New,” and then ‘Type a name for this signature’ you can name it depending on the type of signature you require such as;

John Smith – Social Networking Signature

Derrick Johnson Quote

My Contact Details

You don’t need to worry as no one will see the names of the signatures, it is simply for you to remember what you saved them as.

Creating your signature
Once you have decided on a name, go to the big blank box underneath ‘Edit Signature’, this is where you create the Signature. Put in whatever you think your recipients would want to know such as your contact details, links to your blog or Facebook page etc.

Font
Above the big blank box, are all of the options to personalise your signature from changing the font to adding in a business card or a picture. Once you satisfied with your design, click the ‘Save’ button.

Deciding when the signature will appear
Would you like this signature to be used in new messages, when you forward or reply to an e-mail or both? If you look at the top right of the Signatures and Stationery box you will see ‘Choose Default Signature’ below this you will see the options for ‘New messages,’ and ‘replies/forwards’ select the ones you would like your signature to apply to.

Click OK and you have successfully created your signature!

If you have any questions about creating a signature, we will gladly help. Call 0207 644 2610 or email info@fifosys.com

Instagram is a free photo sharing application that allows users to take a photo, and then share it on a variety of social networking sites such as Flickr, Facebook and Twitter. It’s very similar to Twitter however without sharing real time text updates you just share pictures, whether you are drinking coffee at Starbucks or buying the new Louis Vuitton bag. It’s fun way to show your followers what you are up to.

The app enables you to alter the photos you take with your phone by adding filtered layers that imitate the look of low-end film cameras.

The filters include being able to have pictures which are discolored; scratched-up, quasi-vintage photos with square, black film backdrops are of dubious quality.

Why was Instagram created?

The creators of Instagram wanted everyone to imagine a world more connected through images of what happens around them – whether through friends or people across the world.

Why use Instagram rather than upload your pictures straight away on social media platforms?

As Mobile phones do not have high quality pictures, Instagram set out to create filters to transform users photos into professional-looking snapshots, As users find sharing pictures on multiple platforms is a pain – they found a way to take a picture once, and have it shared (instantly) on the services of their choice.
