What Apple’s first foldable iPhone tells us about Wi-Fi, mobile working, secure access and the infrastructure behind modern work

It’s that time of year again, where the latest and greatest new iPhone(s) are released to much fanfare, and the sentiment of “Oooh, look at how fast it is!”, “New Siri Updates!”, or “The battery life is so much better!” is spoken about online by Apple fanatics, while Android users sit and sneer at how they’ve “had these features for years”.

But whichever camp you’re in, there’s a familiar ritual beneath the surface whenever a new device appears. We do look at all those shiny new features - and if a folding iPhone is the greatest idea in the world, or slightly gimmicky… Then we ask whether it could replace something else in the bag.

Apple has actually made that question somewhat more difficult to avoid with their iPhone Duo announcement. Its first foldable iPhone opens into a 7.6-inch display and supports two apps side by side, and supports the Apple Pencil. Apple is showing it running Slack, editing copy with Siri AI, making FaceTime calls and handling the sort of work that, not long ago, would have meant opening a laptop… Although it does come at a cost that’s comparable to a MacBook (other laptops are, of course, available).

Now, let’s get it right, it’s probably not going to replace every single laptop - I mean, a finance team is unlikely to abandon a large spreadsheet for a folding phone before lunch. But that’s not really the important point (or the target audience).

The important point is that phones are becoming more credible as primary work devices, and when the endpoint changes, the infrastructure behind it has to keep up.

The short answer: is your network ready for the iPhone Duo?

Your business network is ready for devices such as the iPhone Duo if it can provide consistent Wi-Fi coverage, sufficient capacity during peak periods, stable performance for calls and cloud apps, secure access based on user and device identity, and useful visibility when something goes wrong.

A fast internet package helps, but it is only one part of the answer; you also need to consider access points, cabling, switching, wireless design, security policies, device management, cloud configuration, and support, all of which affect the experience.

In short, a faster phone won’t rescue a poorly planned network.

A laptop replacement story? Not really

The iPhone Duo is simply a very visible example of a broader shift in taste, driven by consumers and manufacturers alike. If you look back at mobile phones over their broader history, they went from big bricks, before shrinking en masse to be pocket-sized, and the ‘smaller is better’ type mindset largely took over from the 90s and 2000s (which is where we got some weird-looking phones).

You can probably argue that the BlackBerry revolutionised phones for work, but with the introduction of smartphones - namely the iPhone, launching in 2007 - we slowly started yearning for things to be bigger again. That meant larger screens, something with all-day battery life, enhanced cameras, and the ability to multitask efficiently. People like the ability to do meaningful work on phones and tablets.

But equally, a quick email check is one thing - but a 45-minute video meeting while viewing a document, messaging a colleague and pulling information from a cloud system is another. Add AI features that may combine on-device processing with cloud services, and the phone is no longer just receiving the occasional notification, but rather sustaining a live working session.

That changes the demand profile of smartphones again, compared to what we knew back in the late 2000’s. As more devices stay connected, more traffic moves in both directions, and users roam between desks, meeting rooms and shared spaces without wanting calls to wobble, business data is accessed from more places, through more apps, on devices that may be personally owned or only lightly managed.

So while your device might still fit in a pocket (when folded, in some cases). Its infrastructure requirements really don’t.

1. Coverage is not the same as capacity

Many offices can display full Wi-Fi bars and still deliver a poor working experience. Coverage tells you that a signal exists, but capacity tells you whether the network can cope when dozens of people are using that signal at once.

Don’t overlook that distinction in spaces where mobile devices are - or can become - serious work tools. A shared access point may be perfectly adequate at 8am, then struggle when a meeting ends, everyone returns to their desks, and several video calls begin at once. Guest devices, meeting-room equipment, printers and building systems are competing for airtime too.

The iPhone Duo supports Wi-Fi 7, which enables better performance on compatible networks, but that doesn’t mean every business should immediately replace every access point with the seventh generation. New client hardware cannot, and indeed will not, compensate for poor access-point placement, congested channels, old switching, weak cabling or an undersized internet connection.

A good place to start is with gathering evidence. Take a look at where users work, how many devices gather in each area and what happens during the busiest hour - a proper wireless survey and capacity review is far more useful than standing in reception and checking the signal icon.

2. Video calls care about consistency, not headline speed

Cloud productivity is often described as being a bandwidth problem, and sometimes, it is. But real-time applications also care about latency, jitter and packet loss: whether traffic arrives quickly, evenly and intact.

Microsoft Teams, for example, adapts media quality to the available network bandwidth, which is helpful but comes with visible consequences. Insufficient or inconsistent capacity can mean softer video, delayed speech, frozen screen sharing or those ever-wonderfully familiar few seconds in which everyone politely talks over one another.

For you, a good place to start is in testing the experience where work actually happens, including small meeting rooms, breakout areas, warehouse floors, and the far end of the office, not just the desk nearest the network cabinet. Roaming matters too - Apple (and indeed any handheld) devices make their own decisions about moving between access points, so wireless design needs sensible coverage overlap and compatible roaming features if live calls are expected to continue smoothly.

3. Treat phones as an endpoint, not an accessory

If a device can open customer records, approve payments, read email, join internal conversations and use AI with business context, it is the literal definition of being an endpoint. The fact that it can also receive personal messages doesn’t make the business data aspect any less important.

This is where mobile device management and identity controls must become practical, rather than theoretical. Organisations should have the capacity to know which devices are accessing their systems, whether those devices meet a sensible security baseline, and what happens when one is lost, sold or leaves with an employee.

The NCSC recommends using device identity and device health as signals when making access decisions. For an SME, that can translate into a manageable set of controls:

  • keep an accurate inventory of business devices and ownership
  • use mobile device management where the risk and use case justify it
  • enforce supported operating systems, updates, encryption and screen locks
  • protect accounts with strong multi-factor authentication or passkeys
  • use conditional access to restrict sensitive systems when a device is unmanaged or unhealthy
  • separate personal and business data where bring-your-own-device arrangements are allowed
  • make remote lock, wipe and access revocation part of the leaver and lost-device process

There’s no requirement to treat every single employee’s mobile phone like a high-security laboratory, but if they can access sensitive or company information, it does require making a conscious decision about what a managed device can access, what an unmanaged one can access, and where the line between them sits.

4. Check the route to your applications

A modern mobile workflow rarely stops at the physical perimeters of a local network. It travels through DNS, internet connectivity, identity services, security controls, SaaS platforms and sometimes a VPN before reaching the application the user needs.

Any weak link can make the device feel slow or unreliable. An ageing VPN concentrator, for example, may become a bottleneck, while a line-of-business system may perform poorly on a mobile browser, or a cloud application may depend on an identity policy designed only for Windows laptops. Similarly with permissions, the guest Wi-Fi may block something users need, while the corporate network has become too permissive because exceptions have accumulated over time.

This is exactly why network readiness should include application journeys. Pick the tasks people genuinely need to complete and follow them end-to-end. Can a managed mobile user sign in cleanly? Does multi-factor authentication behave sensibly? Can they reach only the systems they should? Is performance acceptable from the office, home and mobile connection?

For some organisations, secure access service edge or zero-trust network access will be part of that answer. Just bear in mind that access should be granted based on who the user is, the state of the device, and the sensitivity of the application, rather than simply because something is connected to the office Wi-Fi.

5. AI makes the traffic pattern less predictable

The iPhone Duo is designed for on-device AI, but ‘on-device’ doesn’t mean offline. Apple says some intelligence is processed locally, and some can use Private Cloud Compute. Business users will also continue to reach AI through the likes of Microsoft 365, browsers, meeting tools, transcription services and specialist applications.

The result is probably not necessarily one enormous surge in traffic, but in a more varied mix of activities: voice, video, document retrieval, model requests, synchronisation, and background services, often occurring together.

That is also another reason to avoid sizing a network around a simple average, as average utilisation can look perfectly comfortable, while short periods of congestion make calls and cloud applications unpleasant. Monitoring should show busy periods, application behaviour and recurring problems, not just whether the internet connection is technically up.

6. Visibility is part of readiness

When a user complains that "the Wi-Fi is slow", the network may be responsible. It may also be the device, the application, the identity service, the internet provider or a global cloud incident. Occasionally, for extra enjoyment, two or more of those things fail at once.

A ready environment gives the IT team sufficient visibility to quickly narrow down the problem, with useful monitoring of connectivity, access points, switches, device health, and key cloud services, supported by clear ownership and escalation routes.

It also means learning from support data. For example, if the same meeting room produces repeated call-quality tickets, or mobile users regularly struggle with one application, that’s not an unlucky coincidence. It’s concrete evidence for where - and what - the next improvement should be.

Do UK SMEs need to upgrade to Wi-Fi 7 now?

Not automatically, no. Wi-Fi 7 may be valuable where a business has high device density, demanding real-time applications, suitable client devices and an upgrade already due. For another organisation, better access-point placement, updated firmware, additional capacity, improved switching, or a second internet circuit may deliver more value.

The sensible structure is to understand the requirement, measure the current environment, identify the constraint and then choose the technology. Otherwise, buying the newest access points first and asking what problem they solve afterwards is a pretty expensive way to decorate the ceiling of any office.

A practical network readiness checklist

Before more laptop-style work shifts onto phones and tablets, ask:

The device is the visible bit, but the network does the quiet work

The iPhone Duo will attract attention because it folds, opens into a larger screen and asks an irresistible gadget question to Apple users: could this replace more of my laptop?

For business leaders and IT teams, the better question is what happens if people actually try.

If mobile devices become a more important place for video calls, cloud applications, AI and access to core systems, then the network cannot be treated as office plumbing that was installed once and forgotten. It needs to be measured, secured, and improved in line with the way people work now.

That doesn’t always mean rushing out and implementing a dramatic infrastructure project, as often it can just mean joining up the basics: wireless design, capacity, identity, device management, secure access and monitoring.

The most capable endpoint in the room is only as useful as the systems behind it, and a clever folding phone doesn’t change that - it just makes it that bit harder to ignore.
